| Abstract | The Steilacoom Library Association was founded in 1858. |
| Biography | The Steilacoom Library Association was established in February 1858 for the purpose of "The diffusion of useful knowledge and sound morality: First, by establishing a Library; Second, a Reading Room; Third, by procuring public lectures, essays, and establishing debates." The library was maintained by monthly dues of twenty-five cents, paid by individual members. A lifetime membership was $25.00. Books were lent for two weeks to those living within 1½ miles and three weeks to those living further away. Fines were fifty cents a week for overdue books. The association appears to have existed through at least 1895. |
| Scope and Content | The records include a minutes book, 1858-1868, 1895; corporate records, including drafts and additions and corrections to the constitution and by-laws; fragmentary correspondence, membership rolls, financial records, book publisher's catalogues, and miscellaneous items. |
