AbstractThe papers of Tacoma Lesbian Concern cover the years 1976 to 1998 and include catalogs, financial records, committee minutes, correspondence, membership lists, newsletters, photographs, and publications.
BiographyTacoma Lesbian Concern (TLC) was organized in 1979 to provide a setting and forum for lesbians in the Tacoma area to socialize with each other and to network with regional and national lesbian/gay/feminist organizations. Envisioned primarily as a social group, TLC also pursued an active educational and political role in the community, which included participation in local Gay Pride Marches and the endorsement of candidates and issues. Among the social events organized by TLC, usually on an annual basis, included a fundraising dance, a winter retreat, camping trip, summer picnic, and Halloween party. A newsletter was started by TLC in 1979 to publicize the group's meetings and events as well as to encourage the submission of articles and poetry by local lesbians. Lacking a defined set of by-laws, TLC operated with little in the way of administrative structure aside from planning committees that coordinated the annual dance, designed the group's logo, and planned social events.
Scope and ContentThe papers of Tacoma Lesbian Concern cover the years 1976 to 1998 and include catalogs, financial records, committee minutes, correspondence, membership lists, newsletters, photographs, and publications. Correspondence constitutes about one-quarter of this collection and covers the years 1985 to 1995, concentrating mostly on 1986 to 1992. Among the subjects addressed in the correspondence include the impact of Proposition 2, Tacoma's "very closeted" lesbian/gay community, the Committee To Protect Tacoma Human Rights, Puyallup School District and OASIS group controversy, lesbian musician Jamie Anderson, Seattle's Lesbian/Gay Pride Parade March, expulsion of TLC group at Moran State Park, and the perceived need to keep lesbian orientation a secret at work.
