AbstractThe Kulshan Chapter of the Daughters of America, Bellingham, WA, was chartered in 1926 to further the goals of the national organization and to provide insurance for its membership.
BiographyThe Daughters of America was established in Pennsylvania in 1891 as the women's auxiliary of the Junior Order of the United American Mechanics (now United American Mechanics). There were nine objectives, including:

"Promote and maintain the interests of Americans and shield them from the depressing effects of unrestricted immigration."

"Establish a fund or funds for the payments of benefits in case of sickness, disability or death of its members."

"To maintain the Public School System of the United States of North America and to prevent interference therewith, and uphold the reading of the Holy Bible therein."

The organization's concern about immigration was prompted by "The constant landing upon our shores of the hordes of ignorant, vicious and lawless criminals of the old world…."

The Kulshan Chapter No. 3, was chartered in Bellingham in 1926 and appears to have survived into the late 1960s or early 1970s.
Scope and ContentThe records include a complete set of minutes, 1926-1965, which include the routine business of the organization; very fragmentary correspondence, 1929-1951; incomplete run of printed proceedings of the State Council of Washington and Oregon annual sessions; and miscellaneous forms.
