| Biography | Women of Vision is a nonprofit organization whose members are a group of community leaders in
Tacoma, Washington, organized to create opportunities to effect change for the betterment of women of all
nationalities through the development, support, and promotion of all women as leaders and through
international and intercultural communication among women. Women of Vision is a small, facilitative,
action-oriented group that organizes and sponsors opportunities for women to come together to increase
their understanding of one another, explore opportunities open to them and be aware of the obligation they have assumed. All funds raised by the all volunteer, nonprofit organization are used to further its goals, as the organization does not maintain an office or a staff.
Throughout the world, women have traditionally had positions in society that provided for less
than the standard quality of life. Though the United States has made great strides in developing a more fair
and equal system for women, there still exists a wide disparity in opportunities open to women. In many
other nations, women experience less than humane conditions as an accepted way of living. Women of
Vision uses the conferences to dis cuss the various issues facing women throughout the world regardless of
location. Each conference deals with a different theme and brings together women from different countries.
The 1990 Goodwill Games Conference marked the first international conference held by Women of Vision in
which they brought women delegates from the Soviet Union to Tacoma for roundtable discussions on
women's issues. In 1994, the group organized a Women's Global Forum with the Department of Labor
Women's Bureau to focus on the 1995 World Women's Conference in Beijing, China.
Since the inception of Women of Vision in 1989, the organization has sponsored, planned, or
participated in nine major women's events. Women of Vision continues to inform women about their rights
and international issues. |
