| Abstract | The Olympia local union of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union was chartered in June 1883. |
| Biography | The National Woman's Christian Temperance Union was founded by Frances Willard in 1874. It provided for "Women banded together for the protection of the home, the abolition of the liquor traffic, and the triumph of Christ's Golden Rule in custom and in law." Throughout its history, the WCTU has promoted educational programs relating to the deleterious results of alcohol, narcotics, tobacco, and gambling. It has always supported local or national prohibition.
The Olympia local union was chartered in June 1883 to support and implement the national programs of the WCTU at the local level. They worked closely with Olympia churches and schools to promote their programs. |
| Scope and Content | The collection includes three minutes books, of which the first (1883-1897) is fairly complete. All of the books for the 1897-1926 are missing, and after 1926 the coverage and entries are brief. As a result, discussion of the WCTU fight for Prohibition and against repeal is lacking. |
