| Biography | Bella Baird taught first grade at Washington School in Walla Walla in 1914-1915. Her father had mining interests at Greenhorn, Oregon, where Bella spent her summers cooking, sewing, and panning for gold. She seemed to not particularly like teaching as her entries for school resumption after vacations are less than enthusiastic. Baird found the Teachers' Institutes (like staff meetings) tedious, "Oh, misery. Three days of it over." (18 September 1914). Her spare time was spent socializing, sewing, taking photographs, and painting china. |
| Scope and Content | Baird was a diligent diarist, making almost daily entries. She mentions weather, social activities, visitors, and events around town. The diary includes a list of gifts between 1910 and 1915, although it is not clear whether they were given or received. There is a listing of photographs Baird took. Also included is a group of sixteen post card size photographs taken at Greenhorn, OR, and several of groups of women, some of which include Bella. |
