AbstractThe Altrura Study Club was organized in 1908 by a group of Tacoma, Washington women to "promote the Cultural Arts and Social Progress."
BiographySeeking to promote intellectual growth and discussion, a group of Tacoma women gathered to organize the Altura Study Club to "Promote the Cultural Arts and Social Progress." Each year a topic was selected and members were assigned papers to be researched and delivered to the group. On occasion outside speakers were invited to deliver talks. Over the years the topics have been varied and have included: Literature (1926-1930), A study of Russia (1935-1938), Contemporary trends in the arts and sciences (1938-1939), and a wide variety of regional geographical studies.
Scope and ContentThe minutes books include a brief discussion of current business and the program topic. Depending on the current secretary, some minutes are detailed, while others are not. Unfortunately, the text of the various papers was not retained. The Yearbooks list the membership and topic of discussion for the year.
