| Abstract | Seattle attorney Janis Bianchi was active in Washington state lobbying organizations dedicated to women's health issues and civil rights between 1989 and 1997. |
| Biography | From 1989 to 1994 Seattle attorney Janis Bianchi served on the board of Taxpayers for Choice, part of the Pro-Choice Washington movement, to ensure that Washington women retained reproductive rights and easy access to health care. In 1992 she became involved with Washington Citizens for Fairness, serving on the executive board. The mission of the organization was to protect the civil rights of all individuals regardless of race, gender, creed or sexual orientation through education and political organization. As a lawyer, Jan became involved in the political process by providing legal advice and suggestions for wording of legislative documentation. She was also involved with the Privacy Fund, the political action committee (PAC) for Washington Citizens for Fairness. |
| Scope and Content | The collection contains the records retained by Janis Bianchi during the time she was involved with various lobbying organizations. The documentation provides insight into the issues of the day and into all aspects of the political process, from drafting initiatives to fund-raising, from identifying sympathetic members of the legislature to choosing the most effective method of lobbying. As a board member, Janis collected the minutes and agendas of the organizations and also kept the notes that she had made on issues before the board, correspondence, internal memoranda and financial reports. As a lawyer, she made comments on the wording of initiatives, letters and flyers. The collection therefore has several drafts of the same initiative, copies of court cases and information from other states on relevant issues. It also includes the results of surveys of the members of the state legislature. The Privacy Fund documentation is illustrative of the methods of fund-raising and constraints placed on that process. |
