| Biography | The Nokomis Study Club was established in 1933 by five Tacoma neighborhood women who wanted to stimulate their intellect and take their minds off "the dark times of the depression". They studied and discussed a wide variety of topics such as Washington State history, famous persons, and foreign countries. Book and magazine article reviews were often part of the meetings. The club first held meetings twice a month and eventually just once a month, September through May. Over time the club meetings became increasingly social in purpose. Reports were still given, but more time was spent discussing members' health issues. The Nokomis Study Club also participated in charitable events such as the sale of Christmas seals for the Tuberculosis League of Pierce County and donating socks to the Washington Soldiers Home and Colony in Orting, Washington each Christmas season. |
