RemarksA potlatch is a great feast where gifts are given by the host. Marian Smith (THE PUYALLUP-NISQUALLY; New York : Columbia University Press, 1940) identifies this potlatch in 1907 on the Nisqually Reservation for the purposes of honoring the dead. Alice James was moving her father's sister's body from the Puyallup cemetery to a Nisqually grave.
