Chapin Bowen worked as a commercial and newspaper photographer in Tacoma from 1925 - 1955. Because of his newspaper work, the Bowen collection is slanted towards newsworthy events such as labor strikes, unemployment rallies and other depression era events. He photographed political campaigns, arts activities, sports, labor, business, labor, transportation including aeronautics, and education.

The Bowen Collection is comprised of approximately 30,000 negatives, and another 2,000 prints.
