Davis, Jack E., papers,

Abstract: Jack E. Davis was a South Puget Sound environmental activist with a particular interest in bird populations and their protection.

Biography: Jack E. Davis (1923-1998) came to Washington in 1970 and settled in Thurston County. Long interested in birds, he and his wife, Ada, were founding members of the Black Hills Chapter of the National Audubon Society in 1973, and remained lifelong active members.

Davis was an expert, self-taught birder with a particular interest in species protection. He was credited with single handedly restoring the purple martin populations to southern Puget Sound when they were on the brink of extinction. They turned their property into a wildlife sanctuary, which became a part of the Capitol Land Trust.

Davis was one of South Puget Sound’s leading environmental activists. He was considered to be a thorn in the side of developers who were determined to eradicate many pristine landscapes. In an interview he stated, “The bottom line is: there’s too many people. Growth, growth, growth—it’s like God’s word to developers and local politicians.” Davis was instrumental in the creation of several county parks, the Bowerman Basin National Wildlife Refuge in Grays Harbor County, and the Woodard Bay Natural Area Preserve.

Scope and Content: The papers consist of correspondence, subject files, newsletters, and miscellaneous reference materials, including  clippings, pamphlets, environmental impact statements, and brochures, etc.

Davis incorporated all of his correspondence into the various subject files and that has been retained. Files include incoming and outgoing correspondence to public officials and communications to and from the many environmental organizations in which he played an active role.

The papers provide a rich resource for the study of a local environmental activist.
